The SOEB difference

Why freshness
changes everything

Most supermarket coffee was roasted weeks or months before it reaches you. Our coffee is roasted fresh in small batches and dispatched quickly — because freshness isn't just a preference, it's a measurable difference in flavour.

CO₂ released from freshly roasted beans during brewing — known as the "bloom" — is the sign of a live, active coffee. It creates body, sweetness and complexity. Stale coffee has already off-gassed, leaving a flat, one-dimensional cup. Every bag we send is as fresh as it gets.

Where it comes from

Farmer direct.
Uganda sourced.

We source directly from farmers in Uganda — no middlemen, no commodity markets. Our Arabica comes from Mount Elgon, a volcanic highland that produces some of East Africa's most distinctive coffee. Our Robusta comes from Masaka in central Uganda.

Direct sourcing means we know exactly where our coffee comes from, who grew it, and under what conditions. It also means the farmers we work with are paid fairly — which is the only way to sustain the quality we depend on.

Know your beans

Arabica vs
Robusta

The coffee world treats Arabica as superior and Robusta as cheap filler. The truth is more interesting. Sourced carefully and roasted well, both have genuine, distinct character worth understanding.

Common questions

FAQ

How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?

Our coffee is roasted fresh in small batches and dispatched promptly. Each bag is sealed with a one-way valve to lock in freshness during delivery — so you receive it at its peak, not after sitting in a warehouse for weeks.

Which coffee should I choose if I'm new to specialty coffee?

Start with the Discovery Set — it includes all three coffees so you can taste the differences side by side. If you'd rather pick one, the Signature Blend is the most approachable: balanced, smooth and well-suited to every brew method.

What grind sizes do you offer?

We offer whole bean, espresso, filter, cafetière and Aeropress grinds. Select your preference when adding to bag. If you have a grinder at home, whole bean is always recommended — it stays fresher longer once opened.

Is your Robusta actually good quality?

Yes — and we understand the scepticism. Most Robusta sold in the UK is commodity-grade filler used to cut costs. Ours is sourced directly from farmers in Masaka, Uganda, scores 84 on the SCA scale, and is roasted as a standalone specialty coffee. Bold and earthy with genuine natural sweetness — nothing like what you'd find in a supermarket blend.

What does the SCA cupping score mean?

The Specialty Coffee Association uses a 100-point scale to evaluate coffee quality. Anything scoring 80 or above is classified as specialty grade — the top tier of global coffee. Our Arabica scores 87, our Robusta 84. Both are assessed by a certified Q-grader across ten criteria including flavour, body, acidity and balance.

Is SOEB coffee ethically sourced?

Yes. We source directly from farmers in Uganda, which means no commodity brokers and no anonymous supply chains. We know who grows our coffee, where it comes from, and we pay fairly for it. Direct relationships with growers are the foundation of both our quality and our values.
